FMS Treatment - continuation
Diet and FMS therapy

There are several dietary supplement recommended for FMS patients. However, only few of them show real positive effect. Some of those supplements provide exogenous amino acid - tryptophan and Griffonia seed extract being natural source of 5-hydroxytryptophan, as they both are precursors of serotonin, which level is low in FMS.

Other dietary supplements provide i.a. melatonin (improves sleep), St. John's Wort extract (improves mode) , l-carnitine (relieves pain and improves mental health), SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine) that are belived to soothe various symptoms of FMS.

We recommend our Myalgan and proMyalgan products that are designed based on Chinese medicine and Indian ayurveda medicine and have proven and documented effect.

Diet plays an essential role in our life and health. Inappropriate diet may worsen some FMS symptoms. On the other hand balanced and well composed diet may have positive impact on disease course.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine interventions are currently being used extensively by rheumatology patients overall, and by FMS patients in particular. All categories of alternative practices are used more often by FMS patients, compared to others. There are very many practices of complementary and alternative medicine just to mention some of them:

  • - Acupuncture & acupressure
  • - Aromatherapy
  • - Chiropractic
  • - Craniosacral therapy
  • - Energy medicine
  • - Feng shui
  • - Hatha yoga nad Yoga
  • - Hypnosis
  • - Iridology
  • - Magnetic healing
  • - Music therapy
  • - Pilates
  • - Reflexology
  • - Urine therapy
  • - Water cure

Two-thirds of patients using alternative medicine practices were concurrently using multiple interventions. Alternative medicine practices are currently being used by almost all FMS patients. This observation might indicate that traditional medical therapies are inadequate in providing symptomatic relief to FMS patients.

New FMS Therapy?

Dr Paul St. Amand, endocrinologist, who suffers himself from fibromyalgia, as several memers of his family, investigates impact of guaifenesin administration on fibromyalgia. Guaifenesin is an ether derivate of guaiacol, medicine used as an expectorant that also has some muscle relaxing action (guaiphenesin converts into methocarbamol). It is used in many cough preparations. The theoretical basis for this is supposition (however not confirmed scientifically), that several symptoms in FMS are related to low energy level of cells due to low level of ATP* in these cells Low ATP level is caused by phosphates deposited in tissues.

Some FMS patients reveal carbohydrate imbalance and low sugar level (hypoglycaemia) and this happens due to the repetitive insulin bursts. Some strict dietetic measures are recommended.

Dr Amand believes that guaifenesin will help to eliminate excess phosphates through kidneys and would reverse the process that as he believes lays in the base of fibromyalgia. He formed system of treatment in fibromyalgia so called guaifenesin protocol, where besides of administration of guaifenesin is performed total elimination of salicylates.

* ATP - adenosine triphosphate is a nucleoside triphosphate used in cells as a coenzyme, often called the "molecular unit of currency" of intracellular energy transfer.
